Q ~* And my favorite: "Why are the dolls so... ugly/dirty/old looking?"~*~*~*
A

Due to the nature of Primitive Crafting, they are supposed to look that way! Why?

 Imagine your favorite doll from your childhood... it is probably "dirty" and to all unknowing eyes, "ugly". You may get asked "Why do you keep that ugly thing?" And you look at her, and know that she shares many a memory of tea parties, nights cuddled in bed together, journeys outside and to Grandma's House. You love her. She's your first baby. To part with her would be... wrong!

 My very favorite doll is my mom's old Tiny Tears doll. She has no hair (unless you count the tiny mohawk on her head). But to me, she is the perfect doll. She came to me very well-loved. My other favorite is a homemade doll from my aunt. Her pajamas are so worn that they are almost see through. I've sewn her arms back on more times that I can remember, and her bun is falling from her hair. Now my daughters tote them around... hairless little wonder that Tiny Tears is in her home-made dress... and poor wobbly "Chiena Doll"... I feel that they "hold" the spirit of being loved, and kids pick up on that, and continue loving the dolls we did. (Often without being told, "This was my favorite doll".)

Instead of ugly & dirty, think "Very Well Loved". They are supposed to look like they were your mom's or  grandma's, tucked away in the attic for years & years... just waiting for someone else to see their potential to let someone love them with their whole heart.

They are supposed to be reminiscent of dolls made by Country Mama's with very little material available. It is all about people being creative with what they have on hand. Making something to love from scraps... which is a LOT more challenging than having all the supplies they needed. They most likely didn't use a pattern. And the dolls came out crude, but oh how their children loved and cherished them!

Both of my girls love that I make dolls. They take pride in cuddling them gently while I make the dress/undies/etc. They come to you after knowing the joy of a gleeful little girl's slow dance, child-secrets, and caresses. I'm pretty sure all of them will have played Ring Around the Rosie by the time they reach your house. ;)

My sweet girls help me pack them into a box for travel & are sent off with well-wishes for their new home. (They are also made with that much love & care... We love raggedy "folk" little dolls!)

 I feel like my dolls make themselves. I cut them out of material without a pattern. After they are made, I lay them on the different materials I have, and let the materials "call" to me. (I do the same with quilts & stitcheries.)

My dolls come to you made with love, and will withstand your children's dances**, or can be set up high on a shelf for you to enjoy for years to come...

~~~~~~~~~~~~** Most dolls are made for children 3 and older, because they will have buttons on them, and they may choke. Although they are made to look like "Primitive" or "Folk Art" dolls, I make all my dolls very well. They will withstand normal childhood play. (Meaning, their arms & legs are sewn on very tightly!)**~~~~~~~~~~~~~
