Most of us are guilty of doing one or more of the above when using candles. Although beautiful and fun, you can see that candles can be very dangerous if not used properly. Use of our products means you have read and understand the safety rules & agree not to hold NapthymeCandles.com responsible for careless use of our products.

Never leave a burning candle unattended! This is the #2 cause of candle accidents/fires.

Did you know?

If your flame is huge & you can see black smoke, it needs to be trimmed.

I burned the candle the "wrong" way to show what it looks like. Do not try this at home.

Trim your wicks before you light, every single time. Candles themselves produce very little soot if burned correctly. The soot, and dangerous smoke from candles comes after they are blown out.

The best way to extinguish a candle is to use a special candle snuffer or candle quencher. Simply dipping the wick into the wax allows smoke-less extinguishing. Your lungs will thank you for it. It also prevents wax splatters on furniture.

It is reccomended that you not burn scented candles around birds. Metal core wicks can be lethal to them. (All of our wicks are cotton core, but to be on the safe side, I'd suggest not burning candles around them.)

Crooked burning: If wick moves off center, use a butter knife (or a Wick Dipper*) to gently push it back to center.

If soot builds up inside container, that means you aren't watching/trimming your candles properly. (TRIM THOSE WICKS)

Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep.

Always burn candles on protected, heat-resistant surfaces specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be big enough to collect dripping wax.

    Unsuitable Burning Surfaces

  • Televisions
  • Plastic
  • Paper

Keep burning candles away from anything flammable, such as furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, flammable decorations, etc.

Avoid putting candles in drafts to prevent rapid, uneven burning and excessive dripping. Drafts can also blow lightweight curtains or papers into the flame where they could catch fire. Summer fans can cause drafts.

Clean and trim candle wicks to 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch before lighting. Long or crooked wicks cause uneven burning and dripping. All candles, especially highly scented ones, will produce some smoke and soot, but proper burning (keeping wick trimmed and avoiding drafts, etc.) will help eliminate this problem.

Keep candles free of wick trimmings, matches or any flammable material that might ignite.
Please do not to put out candles with pieces of folded paper.
Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Do not place lighted candles where they can be knocked over by children, pets or anyone else.

Discontinue use of a container or votive candle when 1/2-inch of unmelted wax remains. This will prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface and prevent glass containers from cracking or breaking. Extinguish taper and pillar candles when they get down to within 1 1/2 inches of their holders or decorations.

Do not extinguish candles with water. The water can cause the hot wax to spatter and some candle containers to break.

Flashlights and other battery-powered lights are much safer light sources than candles during a power failure.

Don't use a candle as light when you go into a closet to look for things.

Never use a candle for light when fueling equipment such as a lantern or kerosene heater.

VOTIVES

Trim wicks to 1/4" for proper burning.
Always remove metal clip from previous votive before
placing a new votive in holder.
Keep wick centered (after each snuffing center
wick using a wick dipper).
Votives liquify as they burn so be sure and burn
votives in a contained holder made for votives.

PILLAR CANDLES

Trim wicks to 1/4" for proper burning.
Burn a minimum of 1 hour per inch for each inch of the candle's diameter. Pillars should always have flat surface, not a "deep well."
Gently "hug" the soft wax around the well to maintain a flat surface.
Stop burning when there's only 1/2 an inch of wax left.

SQUARE PILLARS
Coming soon
Trim wick to 1/4" each time you light it.
Burn for a minimum of 3 hours each time.
DO NOT 'hug' this candle. Let the corner peaks form on
their own. This adds to the unique look of this candle!
Keep away from drafts.
Please stop burning when there's only 1/2 an inch of wax left. This way you can have a votive holder!

Jar Candles

(coming soon)
Trim wicks to 1/2".
Burn until wax is liquid across the top at each burning.
Stop Burning when there's only 1/2 in of wax left. This prevents the wick-tab from over-heating & shattering the jar.
